YIHR published an Overview of bad practices in the judiciary

Overview: Bad Practices in Prosecuting War Crimes in Croatia

The Youth Initiative for Human Rights made an overview called "Bad Practices in Prosecuting War Crimes in Croatia ". We publish it as a contribution to ending impunity. Many crimes from the 90s are not being prosecuted or are prosecuted insufficiently or non-professionally, the victims are stil waiting for justice and perpetrators are free, often on positions of power.

This overview is thematising cases of crimes committed by the members of Croatian forces in the wars in the 90s and its goal is to put focus of the public on the manner in which the Croatian judiciary is avoiding to establish justice rather than contributing to it.

Also,  we tried to warn on the connection between the powerful politicians with the war criminals. We tried to point to this connection even more, because the judiciary failed to do so.

The Overview is about the "other side" of the military actions. On their anniversaries, the goals are celebrated in Croatia but the strong hatred component and the fact that the actions had many victims are being neglected. Even talking about those victims can be seen as a provocation. This Overview is about them.

Finally, the overview is for the EU institutions. We believe that it is crucial to warn about the problems in Croatian judiciary where, as proven, changes happen only under considerable political pressure. So, while the discussion about the negotiating Chapter 23 is on, we want to contribute to that pressure with the Overview.

The Overview is available on this web site, under "Publications". Currently it is only available in Croatian. We hope to have it in English by the end of the week.
